Weekend Getaway: Bintan

Getaway? But I just got here! Here, in this case, refers to Singapore, where I will be spending two months as part of my communications traineeship. And I had been “here” for not even a week, when my new colleague and roommate Anna dragged me off to this little Indonesian island just off the Singaporean coast.

Okay, so she asked nicely and I said something like “Whoohoo, let’s go! I’m already packed!”

We also took Daniel, an intern from IT, hopped on the ferry…

…and arrived at Bintan Lagoon resort early Saturday afternoon.

The sand was so fine, it squeaked when you walked on it. And I got to watch a lot of little crabs dance away from me, when I inspected some of the heavily overgrown buoys a little more closely.

The whole resort was pretty nice, although food was quite expensive. A cheeseburger for 30 dollars???

But then again, we were millionaires for the weekend…

I had fried carrot cake for dinner (not what you think) and since the cook forgot to add broccoli to Anna’s pasta, we also got a delicious mango pudding.

The hotel staff seem to possess some humor, too.

There was also a lovely crackling bonfire at the beach. I love a good stroll at the beach at night, and it gave Daniel and me a chance to get to know each other a bit.

The breakfast buffet on Sunday was lavish. All sorts of things, from omelettes, to cereal, to curry, to beef noodle soup, to pancakes with maple syrup. I was a big fan of the bread and butter pudding and the fresh pineapple.

I went to the gym twice that weekend, so I decided to reward myself with a beach massage. That was an excellent decision, and really, really relaxing for my sore muscles.

Then I spent the rest of the afternoon in a hanging chair, reading the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson, until it was time to go home.

As we waited for the bus, we watched the fish frolic in the pond.

36 hours of relaxation, pampering and reading is not bad at all.
